Heiðmörk - Municipal Conservation Area of Reykjavik
Just a few minutes away from Reykjavik, is Heiðmörk in all its glory. It is a peaceful place where you can take a walk into the forest or have a barbeque while the kids play on one of the many playgrounds. There are outside barbeques, just remember to bring your own food, coal and some matches. The most popular place is Furulundur. Many families meet to play and have a laugh while enjoying outdoors. This is a large area so be careful not to get lost.
Rauðhólar, red lava are next to the road, just when you reach Heiðmörk. It‘s recommended to stop there and take some pictures. This area is protected in order to preserve natural resources.
How to get there
By car: Drive Suðurlandsvegur, passing the gas station opposite of Rauðavatn. On the right side, is a sign that says Heiðmörk. Pass Rauðhólar and the lake (Elliðavatn). Drive straight ahead through Heiðmörk. If you drive all the way through Heiðmörk, you will end up in Hafnarfjörður. It is better to have a map with you or you could easily get lost.
