17th of June, the National Day of Iceland- Reykjavik
In 1944, Iceland got its independence. The 17th of June was the birthday of Jón Sigurðsson who was the leader of Iceland‘s independence struggle. This special day is celebrated each year.
This is a great day for children of Iceland. They get to go to the city center with balloons and the Icelandic flag and watch entertainment especially meant for them. It is always crowded with people all from Hljómskálagarður to Arnarhóll, down Austurstræti and all the way to Ingólfstorg. There is entertainment everywhere, on the streets and on all open areas in Reykjavik‘s city center.
In the evening, Icelandic bands start to play and the main stage is on Arnarhóll.
